a little history

The Cottage Art Gallery is a hub for local artists who have banded together to showcase their unique, local art.

Located in a cute yellow and blue bungalow at 106 Pocono Trail East, in the courtyard behind Cafe Evergreen, the gallery is open everyday during season except Mondays.

There is a spate of activity that is regenerating Nokomis, including the restoration of the old former bank building.

In 1916, a New York physician, Dr. Fred Albee, came to Venice with a dream. Dr. Albee was commissioned by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers to find an area where a retirement town could be built for retired union members. Albee scouted both coasts, finally settling on this area. He wanted to build a model city and commissioned what may have been Florida's first master planned community. Albee envisioned agriculture, industry, commerce, housing and recreation harmoniously co-existing.

The artists in the community at The Cottage would like to think that Dr. Albee would find our little 500 square foot cottage a part of that dream, as we sit side by side with other restaurants, art galleries, antique shops, parks and a residential community.
